The Crucial Choice for Chinese Canadians in the Federal Election: How to Make Their Voices Heard with Their Votes?

As Canada’s federal election approaches, the voting direction of Chinese Canadian voters has become a focal point for major political parties. During Trudeau’s tenure, many Chinese Canadians initially supported the Liberal Party, but in recent years, growing dissatisfaction with its policies has led some to reconsider. However, with the evolving political landscape influenced by Trump’s policies, the situation in Canada has become more complex, placing Chinese voters at a critical crossroads.

As a minority group, Chinese Canadians must focus on two key factors in this election to safeguard their rights and enhance their political influence.

1. Are the Fundamental Rights of the Chinese Community Protected?

Are Chinese Canadians facing discrimination? Are they being marginalized by political parties? Are they treated fairly? These questions should be central considerations for voters. A party worthy of Chinese Canadian support must make a clear commitment: Regardless of your origin, if you are a Canadian citizen, you deserve equal rights and dignity. The Chinese community must not be "invisible" but should be an integral part of nation-building. Political parties must provide explicit assurances on this issue.

2. Are Chinese Canadian Concerns Being Addressed by Political Parties?

Chinese Canadian communities, particularly in the Greater Toronto Area and British Columbia, hold decisive influence in 8 to 10 key electoral districts. This means that the Chinese vote can play a crucial role in shaping election outcomes. The question now is: how can the community consolidate its political power to ensure that Chinese Canadian issues are considered in policy-making?

Here are four key policy demands that Chinese voters should urge all parties to address:

1. Elevating the Chinese Canadian Museum to a National Institution

British Columbia has already established Canada’s first Chinese Canadian Museum, recognizing the contributions of Chinese immigrants throughout history. Should this historical recognition be elevated to the federal level, with the establishment of a national immigration museum? Chinese Canadians have played a pivotal role in Canada’s development and should be acknowledged as an integral part of the nation’s history. This is not just about historical justice—it also shapes how future generations of Chinese Canadians are perceived in society.

2. Establishing an Asian Caucus in Parliament

In the U.S., Congress has long had an Asian American Caucus, which advocates for the rights and interests of Asian communities. However, in Canada, Chinese Canadian MPs often struggle to exert influence within their parties due to their limited numbers. Should Canada push for the creation of a similar Asian Caucus to ensure that Chinese interests are properly represented at the federal level? Political parties must make clear commitments on this issue.

3. Ending the Unjustified Stigmatization of Chinese Canadian Politicians

In recent years, Chinese Canadian politicians have been repeatedly subjected to unfounded accusations of foreign interference, leading to unfair scrutiny and diminishing Chinese representation in politics. This climate of suspicion discourages qualified Chinese Canadians from running for office and undermines democratic participation. Chinese voters must demand that political parties put an end to scapegoating Chinese officials and ensure that all politicians are treated fairly.

4. Maintaining Canada’s Economic Independence and Strengthening Trade with the Asia-Pacific

For Canada to remain economically independent, it must expand trade relations with the Asia-Pacific region rather than relying solely on Western markets. China, as the world’s second-largest economy, plays a critical role in global trade. However, in recent years, Canada’s trade with China has suffered due to political tensions. Do major parties have a clear trade policy that safeguards Canada’s interests while ensuring stable relations with Asia? This is not only vital for economic prosperity but also for Canada’s global competitiveness.

Chinese Canadians Must Not Be Treated as a “Vote Bank”

History has shown that when Chinese voters passively accept political agendas, they are often ignored and manipulated. The Chinese community must not be seen as a group that is courted during election season but forgotten when policies are made. We must demand real political influence, not just symbolic recognition.

The Chinese community in Canada has a history spanning over a century, and Chinese political participation has been ongoing for more than half a century. Today, we must not only vote but also ensure that our votes carry influence. It is time to make it clear to political parties: Chinese support is not guaranteed. Only those who respect the community and respond to its concerns deserve our votes.

Vote to Protect Chinese Rights and Build a Better Canada

As the federal election approaches, Chinese Canadian voters must turn out in record numbers and use their votes to make their voices heard. We must send a clear message to all political parties:

Chinese Canadians love this country. We are not just a part of Canada—we are an essential and unshakable force that cannot be ignored, marginalized, or stigmatized!
